“Krassin” is an icebreaker that represents a whole era in the history of Russia.

Icebreaker Krassin is the only icebreaker museum in Russia. The ship was built in England in 1916-1917 according to the improved drawings of Vice Admiral S.O. Makarov. Initially, the icebreaker was named after the ancient epic hero Svyatogor, but in 1927, after the death of a Soviet diplomat who had done a lot to return the ship to Russia, the icebreaker was renamed Krassin. The icebreaker Krassin participated in the rescue of Umberto Nobile’s Italian polar expedition in 1928 and conducted the Arctic convoys of the allies during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. Until 1972, the icebreaker escorted ships along the Northern Sea Route and served as a floating power plant on the island of Spitsbergen.

In 1990, it made its last voyage to the ports of Europe. In 1992, the icebreaker became a historical monument of national importance and was permanently moored at Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment. In 1995, the first exposition was opened here, and since 2004, Krassin has become a branch of the Museum of the World Ocean.

The icebreaker Krassin remains a functional vessel, and all the instruments that you will see here can operate properly.
