The Monument to the Policeman (Gorodovoy)

50-52, Suvorovskiy pr.

A bronze statue that was installed to commemorate the guards of order.

The opening of the monument to the Policeman was timed to the 200th anniversary of the Ministry of International Affairs and to the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg and took place in 1998.

The sculptor Andrey Charkin recreated the image of the guardian of the past according to the archive documents and photographs of the late XIX century. In order to become a Policeman, it was necessary to be at least 171 cm tall and have a pleasant appearance – this is exactly how the bronze Policeman was depicted – good-natured and distinguished.

The two-metre figure of a Policeman in a double-breasted suit is mounted on a granite pedestal, from where the bronze guardian of the city thoroughly observes what is happening.

The interesting fact is that initially the monument was temporarily located at the corner of Malaya Konyushennaya Street and Shvedskiy Lane, and only 23 years later it was installed at a permanent location. Nowadays the monument to the guardians of order is located at the intersection of Suvorovskiy prospect and Kavalergardskaya street, in front of the building of the Main Administration for Internal Affairs of the City.
