Monument to Alexander II on Suvorovskiy prospect
32B, Suvorovskiy prospect
Monument to the Russian Emperor Alexander II, who implemented large-scale reforms, survived several assassination attempts and was killed by Narodnaya Volya (People’s will) organization in 1881.
The 2.5 m high monument, made of bronze, is unique in that the emperor is represented on foot, and not on horseback, as was customary since the time of Peter the Great. The Emperor is depicted in full height, gazing into the distance. His whole appearance symbolizes triumph. Every detail of the composition is symbolic. The left hand holds an officer's saber, which tip rests on a stone, and the right hand is clenched into a fist and is located on the hip. However, not all fingers are gathered into a fist - the middle and index fingers of the emperor's right hand show a gesture resembling the Latin letter "V", meaning victory. Alexander II's gaze captures the idea of the fate of Russia and the accomplishment of new feats for the sake of the future of its people.
