Anchor Square is the central square of Kronstadt. Anchor Square is located in the historical center of Kronstadt, between Sovetskaya Street and the Obvodny Canal, as well as in between the technical ravine of Petrovsky Dock and Manezhny Lane. It is bordered by the wall of the Kronstadt Admiralty from the west and by the square of the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral from the east. Anchor Square is remarkable for its rich and heroic history, just like the legendary and valiant city of Kronstadt itself.

Undoubtedly, the name of the square came from the anchor warehouse and the riding cable storage located here in 1754-1898. However, it is not known for certain, when it officially became known as Anchor square. The square already had its modern name in 1908, when midshipman Dorogov published a historical essay describing Kronstadt.

In 1918, the Anchor Square was renamed the Square of the Victims of the Revolution. It is worth mentioning that although it bore this name until 1993, in everyday life the name “Revolution Square” was used most commonly.

Anchor Square also became famous for the public rallies that were sometimes held there. The Kronstadt Uprising began with the 15,000-strong rally on Anchor Square in 1921, when the Kronstadt garrison and a small part of the civilian population put forward the demand “For Soviet Power without the Bolsheviks!”.

Today, Anchor Square in Kronstadt is a favorite place of recreation for citizens and guests of the city, and it also serves as a parade ground for military displays.

The main square of Kronstadt is incredibly unique; it has preserved a cast iron pavement that has almost no equal in Russia.
