One of the oldest greenhouses in St. Petersburg

The Tauride Palace was founded in 1792 upon to the project of Ivan Yegorovich Starov, who was one of the outstanding masters and pioneers of classicism. The estate was a gift from Empress Catherine II to her favourite, Prince G.A. Potemkin-Taurichesky – the military commander, who annexed Crimea to Russia.

The Orangery project was developed simultaneously with the palace and was carried out by the British garden architect William Gould. Initially, the garden occupied only the eastern part of its modern territory. A few years later, after expanding the borders of the garden, a functional greenhouse complex was created in its western part, intended for cultivating fruit and vegetable crops, as well as heat-loving foliage and flowering plants. In 1928–1930, the Orangery fell into disrepair, was dismantled and transferred to the Botanical Garden, where it is currently located. In its place, in 1935, a palm greenhouse was installed, transported from the former royal garden in Tsarskoe Selo. The building was badly damaged during World War II. It was not until 1977 that the pavilion was reconstructed and the exhibition hall “Flowers” was opened in the Orangery.

Nowadays, there are many tropical flowers and palm trees in the greenhouse’s winter garden. Excursions are offered to visitors. Various exhibitions of plants and floristry art are held on the territory of the Orangery as well.
