The largest square in Saint Petersburg and one of the largest in Europe and in the world.

Moscow Square was formed in the 1930s. According to the project of development of the city of 1935-1939 it had to become the main square of Leningrad, as well as the Moscow Prospect which crosses it - the main prospect. The square became the largest one in the city, it was planned to hold ceremonial parades and demonstrations. The size of the area was 13 hectares, although even more were planned - 38-50 hectares.

In 1936-1941, the House of Soviets, a monumental example of the so-called Stalinist classicism, was built on the square, where it was planned to accommodate city and regional party institutions. After the war, the House of Soviets was transferred to scientific institutions.

In April 1970, on the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. I. Lenin, a monument to the leader of the revolution was installed here, designed by M. K. Anikushin and V. A. Kamensky.

One can also see a fountain complex on the square, which appeared here in 2006. The fountains on Moscow Square, which were called «singing», are a rare complex in beauty and volume, consisting of 11 fountains, operating in 2 modes: static and light-musical.
