The most beautiful lighthouses in the vicinity of St. Petersburg
There are about 50 lighthouses in the city on the Neva and its surroundings. Many of them have been lighting the way for ships for decades. We have collected a selection of five beautiful lighthouses near St. Petersburg.
1. Tolbukhin Lighthouse
The oldest lighthouse in the Leningrad Region and one of the oldest in Russia is located on an island in the Gulf of Finland near Kronstadt. In 2019, it celebrated its 300th anniversary. The sketch of the lighthouse was drawn by Peter I. himself. At first it was wooden and was called Kotlinsky, at the beginning of the XIX century it was remade in stone. Tolbukhin Lighthouse still serves as an important landmark for ships. Its beauty can be admired from afar or there is an option of guided visits.
2. Osinovetsky lighthouse
One of the most famous lighthouses in the region has been lighting the way for ships on the southwestern shore of Lake Ladoga for a century. During the Great Patriotic War, the Osinovetsky Lighthouse illuminated the Road of Life and became a symbol of the heroes of the besieged Leningrad. Its height is 70 meters, which makes it one of the highest in Europe. A picturesque beach with pine trees and white sand stretches around the lighthouse. Here you can have a picnic and enjoy the beauty of the northern nature.
3. Stirsudden Lighthouse
On the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, near the village of Ozerki, the Stirsudden Lighthouse has been guarding the shore since 1872. Its name translates from Swedish as "pointing cape". The place where it stands is very dangerous and has known many a shipwreck. The light of Stirsudden is so bright that it can be seen 21 nautical miles from the shore.
4. Shepelevsky Lighthouse
This cast-iron lighthouse stands on the cape of the same name on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. The lighthouse has a heroic history: during the siege of Leningrad, it opened a Small Road of life, along which people evacuated from the city. Today, the Shepelevsky Lighthouse continues to light the way for ships. You can only look at it from afar, but its beauty and history deserve attention.
5. Wooden lighthouse in Kronstadt
This lighthouse at the entrance to the Petrovsky Canal is a symbol of Kronstadt and one of the last wooden lighthouses in the world preserved in good condition. It is located on the pier separating Kupecheskaya and Srednyaya Harbours. The lighthouse was built in 1888, it is still functional, but performs a backup role. You can walk around it and look at the exhibits of the navy — mines, missiles and bathyscaphes.
