The New Museum is considered to be the first public private museum of modern art
The new Museum of Modern Art was opened in 2010 in the historical part of the city in an apartment building, the so-called "Tenement House with commercial premises" right opposite the Vasileostrovskaya metro station. The building was constructed in the eclectic style in 1826. The museum occupies three floors of the building.
The exposition of the museum is based on a magnificent and unique in its significance collection of philanthropist Aslan Chekhoev.
On the territory of the modern museum space, equipped with the latest technology, the attention of its visitors is presented with painting, graphics and sculpture. The collection of the museum acquaints its visitors with works of classics of non-conformist art of the Soviet period and modern Russian art.
In addition to exhibitions the museum also has a lecture hall in which famous artists, leading art historians and art critics regularly perform. Master-classes are carried out in the lecture hall regularly as well.
