Sculptures
of lions - decoration of the granite descent at the Palace Bridge.
The statues of lions installed on the Palace Pier have become a real symbol St. Petersburg. Two majestic figures holding a ball with their front paw are exact copies of the Florentine lions. Copper lions stand proudly on a granite pedestal, turning to each other with bared jaws. The formidable animals were made by the sculptor I.P. Prokofiev and the master I. Prang. The legendary sculpture is based on a copper plate, which was being forged for 32 years. The lions, which have become a real decoration of the Admiralty Embankment and the granite descent to the Neva, make a whole architectural ensemble. The majestic statues are mounted on a cast-iron pedestal and a granite basement, which smoothly turns into a pier. From here one can enjoy magnificent views of the opposite bank of the Neva: The University embankment and the sights located on it.
Petersburgers believe that lions radiate energy that brings people confidence in their abilities. “Meteor” high-speed ferries depart from the famous descent with lions to Peterhof, from this place one can also start trip along the rivers and canals of the Northern capital.
