The sculpture group was installed in honor of the predecessor of modern urban transport.

A monument to a truly popular means of transportation — a horse-drawn tram — was erected in 2004 opposite the Vasileostrovskaya metro station. Vasilievsky Island is rightfully considered the original “tram” center of St. Petersburg, since it was there that the largest number of horse-drawn tram routes were laid.

The monument — a two-story horse-drawn tram car — was created based on a model from 1872-1878. The parts had to be restored based on the drawings of the Putilov plant, which were found in the Central Archive. A ticket office for trains and planes was located in the car.

In 2005, the monument was supplemented with new “characters” — sculptures of two horses by A. Ziyakaev, made of plastic and concrete. In 2009, a tram driver-coachman by the sculptor I. Penteshin and co-authors appeared. The coachman's clothing includes historically accurate details: the cap, inscriptions, plaque with the number 1, the coat of arms of the horse-drawn railway - everything was recreated from historical photographs, Lenfilm recordings and archive materials. Even the buttons of the coachman's coat, with the coat of arms of Russia, were made from molds of buttons from the original uniform of coachmen, preserved at the Mosfilm studio.
