Under the leadership of Field Marshal Rumyantsev, victories were won at Larga and Kagul in the Russian-Turkish War
In 1798, Emperor Paul I issued a decree allocating funds for the construction of a monument in honor of the victories of Field Marshal P. A. Rumyantsev-Zadunaisky. The monument, designed by V. Brenna, was initially erected on the Field of Mars.
In the XIX century, it was decided to move the monument. It was erected on the parade ground between the buildings of the Academy of Arts and the Cadet Corps (Menshikov Palace), where Rumyantsev himself studied. In the 1860s, the monument was surrounded by the Rumyantsev Garden.
