The monastic metochion of Optina Pustyn in the church of the XIX century on Vasilievsky Island

The Stavropegial Church of the Dormition of Our Mother of God is located on the Bolshaya Neva embankment not far from the Blagoveshenskiy Bridge. The building was built in the Russian style by the architect Vasily Antonovich Kosyakov in the period from 1895 to 1903. According to his idea the temple space is formed by a system of intersecting arches. Thanks to this architectural solution, there are no pillars in the interior layout. The temple building was rebuilt many times in Soviet years and it served as a gym, an indoor skating rink, baths, and a flower plantation in different years.

Until the 1990s, the residential buildings of the metochion were used as communal apartments. It is interesting to note that in the 1930s, before the closure of the church, the parents of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill served as choristers there.

The church's exterior, interior decoration and murals were completely restored only in 2013. Restoration work was carried out at the expense of the Svyato-Vvedenskiy Optina Pustyn monastery: the church became its St. Petersburg metochion in 1990.
