The church, built for the French Catholic community in 1903-1909, designed by L.N. Benois and M.M. Peretyatkovich
Emperor Nicholas II in 1898 allowed the French community of St. Petersburgto build a church and maintain it at their own expense. The church was conceived by architectsin the Southern French Romanesque style, although the facade, finished with crumbled granite, echoes the beautiful examples of Northern Art Nouveau and stands out for its unusualappearance among the Catholic churches of Russia.
The church was built of stone, which had remained after construction of the TrinityBridge and was supplied by the "Batignol" company. For this reason, L.N. Benois changedthe original design and proposed to make one vault instead of a three-nave basilica.
The interior of the temple vault amazes with its lightness and grace.
In the chapel of the temple there is a sculpture of the Mother of God, brought from Lourdes. The blue illumination in the chapel that gives it a special mystery air, symbolizes the starry night inwhich the Virgin Mary appeared to the girl Bernadette Soubirous. The interior is decorated withmosaic stained glass windows on biblical subjects, marble bas-reliefsdepicting "14 stations of the Way of the Cross of Jesus Christ", and a marble bust of Jesus Christ. Itis noteworthy that the church houses an organ in the Neo-Gothic style with 20 registers. Inaddition to divine services, organ concerts are also held here.
