Monument To F.M. Dostoevskiy
Bolshaya Moskovskaya ul., 2
St. Petersburg could not help but perpetuate the classic of Russian and world literature. According to UNESCO, Fyodor Mikhailovich is one of the most widely read writers in the world! Although he was born in Moscow, his creative path is inextricably linked with the city on the Neva. It is not just a place for the actions of his novels, but is also a separate significant character.
The monument waited for its installation for more than 40 years. The sketch for the sculpture in the granite was developed in 1956 while the installation happened only in 1997.
The author of the project is Lyubov Mihailovna Holina. Her project, designed together with the architect Vasiliy Petrov, took the first place in the competition of the projects of Dostoevskiy’s monument in 1988, beating 11 other competitors.
The granite sculpture of Dostoevsky was supposed to "grow up" at the meeting place of the heroes of the "White Nights" novel, where the Griboyedov Canal flows into the Kryukov Canal. However, fate decreed otherwise.
The figure of Dostoevsky was decided to be cast in bronze and installed next to the Cathedral of Vladimir Mother of God, of which he was a parishioner. The museum-apartment of Fyodor Mikhailovich is also very close to this place.
Taking into account the feedback, changes to the project were made by Lyubov Holina's son and grandson – Peter and Pavel Ignatiev, respectively. Dostoevsky is easily recognizable, since the textbook portrait of the writer, painted by the artist Vasily Perov by order of the Tretyakov Gallery in 1872, was taken as a basis. Do you remember that portrait hanging in school literature classrooms?
