The project is being implemented with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund and the Culture Committee of the Government of St. Petersburg.
Thanks to the support of the Government of St. Petersburg, all the activities of the project are free.
• St. Petersburg is the largest center of world and Russian culture, where a unique cultural and historical heritage is concentrated.
• There are 5830 historical and cultural monuments on the territory of St. Petersburg, and more than 80% of the monuments are originals.
• St. Petersburg ranks eighth in the list of the most popular and attractive cities in the world (according to UNESCO).
• St. Petersburg, as a territory, is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List with 36 complex objects uniting about 4,000 outstanding monuments of architecture, history and culture.
• The real treasure of St. Petersburg is rightfully considered to be its monuments: monuments, sculptures, triumphal arches and obelisks. Each of them has a rich history and carefully preserves the warmth of the masters who embodied the legends and myths of the Northern Capital in bronze, granite or marble.
• But, the most important wealth of the city is those who love their city, keep its traditions and do everything possible to preserve its history and culture.
The exposition "History of the movement in Defense of St. Petersburg" is a museum–exposition, educational and educational space in which a variety of activities are implemented: excursions, quests, lectures, children's educational programs, film screenings, presentations, seminars, meetings with interesting people.
On November 20, 2021, the grand opening of the first and only museum space in St. Petersburg and Russia dedicated to the history of the movement for the preservation of the cultural heritage of St. Petersburg took place.
The public urban Protection movement in St. Petersburg is more than 100 years old, and this year marks the 55th anniversary of the creation of the St. Petersburg City branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments.
"Today we have the opening of the first stage of the St. Petersburg Center for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage named after Academician Boris BorisovichPiotrovsky. We are starting the creation of the center with a museum exhibition dedicated to the entire history of the movement for the preservation of the cultural heritage of St. Petersburg in retrospect," said Anton Ivanov, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the city branch of the VOOPIiK.
The Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Mikhailovich Piotrovsky, who was present at the opening, greeted the participants on behalf of the Governor of St. Petersburg:
"For more than half a century, the VOOPIiK of St. Petersburg has been engaged in the preservation of monuments. This is an important date, which <...> we celebrate with the opening of a whole, as it seems to me, cultural center where Petersburgers can come and see what the city, together with the VOOPIiK, is doing to preserve the culture of St. Petersburg."
The red ribbon at the opening of the exhibition was cut by the son of Academician Boris
Borisovich Piotrovsky, director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky. He thanked all the participants of the project for creating such a significant museum space for the city:
"The brilliant exposition tells how we have all preserved this city together — it's not so simple: in fact, there are not so many megacities that have preserved the historical center. I hope that the exhibition will be in demand," Mikhail BorisovichPiotrovsky said.
The exposition "The History of the movement in Defense of St. Petersburg" is part of the Center for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage named after Academician B.B. Piotrovsky. It occupies 4 halls, which feature authentic decorative elements of the city's architectural monuments, collections of historical posters and leaflets in defense of the monuments of St. Petersburg, unique materials about social movements that fought for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the city. It highlights all the most significant and bright moments in the history of the city protection movement of St. Petersburg-Leningrad.
"I am very glad that such a center has appeared. It seems to me that this is something that has been missing for quite a long time <...>. I am very glad that there are several exhibits here, handed over by the Committee for the Protection of Monuments and restoration companies that work with us and they have found a worthy place. I wish this museum to continue to be filled with unique exhibits dedicated to the protection of the heritage of our city," said Sergey Vladimirovich Makarov, Chairman of the KGIOP.
The topic of heritage preservation has always been in the center of public attention. However, it is impossible to take care of the heritage without studying it. Until now, there has not been a single modern platform in St. Petersburg where it would be possible to receive professional coverage of history, modernity and the future about the problems associated with the movement in defense of St. Petersburg.
"We finally have not only office space, but also a real public space where everyone can come and learn about the great work that the city department is doing, about the dialogue that we are trying to build with the authorities, with users and owners of monuments, with volunteers, for the sake of only one goal, the goal of saving our common cultural and architectural heritage," said Artem Demidov, Chairman of the Central Council of the VOOPIiK.
Visitors to the exhibition can not only get acquainted with the chronicle of the activities of the city's social movements, see photos of now defunct or significantly rebuilt cultural heritage sites, but also learn how to help preserve the architectural appearance of St. Petersburg. Some of the archival materials are presented in a multimedia format, and everyone can choose a topic of interest to him and get more detailed information on this topic.
St. Petersburg Cultural Heritage Center named after Academician B. B. Piotrovsky is a multifunctional communicative and discussion space with educational and museum–exhibition purposes.
The creation of such a center should become one of the ways to establish a constructive public dialogue on issues of urban protection, a kind of bridge between public organizations, active citizens, government, business and the professional community.
As part of the further implementation of the project in 2022-2023, it is planned to create a new multimedia space in the premises transferred to the St. Petersburg City branch of the VOOPIiK in the Pashkov House (LiteynyProspekt, 37-39). It will be able to host temporary documentary and art exhibitions on the history and architecture of St. Petersburg, including from private collections of St. Petersburg local historians, conference spaces with the possibility of lectures, scientific conferences, seminars, training of volunteers. Master classes, round tables will be held here, a volunteer resource center and an advisory monitoring center with an archive and library will be created.
The exposition is located at the address: Zakharyevskaya str., 14 (entrance from the courtyard)
Working hours: TUE-SAT, from 11 to 17 hours.
The visit is free, but only by appointment on the website "http://открытыйгород.рф/", for organized groups
