The Tauride Garden was laid out around the Tauride Palace, built by decree of Catherine II.

The Tauride Garden is a monument of landscape art in the central part of Saint Petersburg. It is located in the quarter bounded by Kirochnaya, Potemkinskaya, Shpalernaya and Tavricheskaya streets. The area of the Tauride Garden is 21.1 hectares.

The names of the garden, as well as the palace and street are associated with the  Russian statesman and military figure of the time of Catherine II Potemkin, who received the title of Prince of Tauride and the estate lands (garden and palace) for leading a successful attempt to conquer Crimea for Russia, also known since ancient times under Ancient Greek name “Tauris”. As a result of the war, the Crimean Khanate ceased to threaten Russia. The garden and the palace formed a single landscape and architectural complex.

The estate includes a vast garden with greenhouses, artificial ponds and park pavilions. In the middle of the 19th century the garden was opened for public. In winter, skating rinks and sledging areas were arranged on the ponds.

Today there is a greenhouse with amazing rare plants in the garden and the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly is working in the palace building. The garden has sports grounds for various sports. The Tauride Garden is one of the few city parks in the centre where you can always meet joggers. A full circle is about 2.5 km, which is quite convenient for jogging. In summer, visitors to the garden arrange picnics and sunbathe.
