The Resurrection Smolny Cathedral is a functioning Orthodox church and an outstanding architectural monument of the 18th century.

The laying of the cathedral’s foundation stone took place on October 30, 1748 by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. The consecration of the church took place 87 years later, on July 20, 1835. The design of the cathedral was carried out by the architect F.B. Rastrelli, the interior of the temple was created by the architect V.P. Stasov at the beginning of the 19th century.
