One of the most recognizable pedestrian bridges in St. Petersburg.

The pedestrian Bank Bridge over the Griboyedov Canal is one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in the city. Four griffins hold the chains of a light openwork structure of the bridge, which offers unforgettable views of the Kazan Cathedral, Nevsky Prospect, the Singer House and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood.

The bridge was built in 1825-1826 according to the project of W. Traitteur and V.A. Christianovich to provide access to the Assignation Bank building (nowadays, it houses St. Petersburg State University of Economics). Today it is one of the three surviving pedestrian chain bridges in St. Petersburg (along with the Lions and Post-Office bridges).

The decorative design of the bridge was done by sculptor P.P. Sokolov. The lions on the Lions Bridge and the sphinxes on the Egyptian Bridge are also examples of his work. According to the sculptor’s idea, the massive figures of griffins were supposed to hide bridge supports.

On 13 January 2017, renovation work of the Bank Bridge griffins began. The griffins returned to the look they had prior the 1950s restoration. Their color changed back to the color of patinated bronze. In addition, the framework was reconstructed; the railings and the decoration of the bridge were repaired. The bridge was officially opened after the restoration on 19 June 2019.

The winged lion of the Bank Bridge is part of Krupskaya Confectionery Factory’s logo.
