St. Petersburg Demmeni Marionette Theatre is Russia's first professional puppet theater
It was organized in 1918 by Petrograd group of artists led by Lyubov Shaporina-Yakovleva and was called Petrograd State Theatre of Puppets. One of the founders of the Russian Puppet Theatre, an astounding actor and director E.S. Demmeni managed the theatre nearly half a century.Nowadays the theatre's repertoire has got 17 names on the list based on Russian and foreign writers stories. They include differenr styles and genres.
The theatre participated in the creation of the first in the history of Russian and European cinema fiction puppet film "Max and Moritz" (1920s). In 1939 there was established the country's first television puppet film "Scholar in Paradise" by G. Sachs.
