Smolny Cathedral Exhibition and Concert Hall with Bell Tower
In the 1730th years the successor of an imperial throne Elizabeth Petrovna decided to spend the last years of the life in silence and rest of a monastery in an environment of one hundred twenty noble maidens. Being the empress, she ordered to construct a monastery on a place of "The Smolny house" — the palace in which she lived during her youth. A monastic complex had to gather the temple with house churches and a belltower and an institute for girls from noble families.
F. B. Rastrelli is the architect of a cathedral . The cathedral was established in October, 1748, the construction began in May 1751, but war with Prussia began soon, after that financings for construction became insufficient and construction went slowly. Opening of The Smolny Institute took place on June 28, 1764, and the cathedral was completed by the architect V. P. Stasov only in 1835. Exhibitions and concerts of classical music are held in the athedral nowadays.
