In the yard of St. Petersburg’s State University faculty of philology there is a nice chubby female hippopotamus named Tonya
Sign at the monument says that, according to legend, a girl who wants to find a groom must hold on to the right ear hippo, and a young man who wants to find a bride-for the left.
Origins of this legend rooted in 18th century. In those days in St. Petersburg lived a girl and a young man, who were head over heels in love with each other. But the girl's parents were against the marriage with a simple and not a rich person. Couple grieved and decided to be together at least on the other side. Together they jumped into the Neva River. But a miracle happened. The hippo swam on the Neva. The lovers seized his ears and escaped.
