Chizhik-Pyzhik

A decorative composition on the abutment of First Inzhenerny (Engineers') Bridge spanning the Fontanka River

The monument is shaped as a tiny bronze bird resting on a granite console (architect V. B. Bukhaev). The author and creator of the model is Georgian painter and theatre figure R. Gabriadze. The monument was unveiled on 12 November 1994 which was timed to the Golden Ostap humour festival. This character of the city folklore ("Chizhik-Pyzhik, where have you been? I drank vodka on the Fontanka River") originates from the Law School located on Fontanka River Embankment. Its students wore black and yellow uniform, so they were nicknamed "chizhiks-pyzhiks" ("chizhik" is Russian for "siskin").
