The 14th International Ballet Festival DANCE OPEN

04 March 2015

It has been already a tradition: every spring St. Petersburg and guests of the city are in anticipation of one of the most significant and spectacular events of the international ballet calendar – the DANCE OPEN Festival. This year it will take place on 21 – 27 April, 2015.

Level, authority and name of the Festival for over 10 years have been created and supported by the most talented soloists of the world ballet, leading choreographic brands and famous choreographers. Among the latter are legendary keepers of classical tradition and outrageous avant-garde apologists. This year’s program is not an exception.

On 21 April to open our official program of «art at its purest», we have Back to Bach, an evening of mini-masterpieces performed by the renowned company of the Dutch National Ballet. Consisting of five sketches created by very different contemporary choreographers - van Manen, Wheeldon, Pastor - the performance is a meditation on the theme of returning to the source, of the way in which, in difficult situations, high art helps us to find a common denominator of humanity and goodness

The Taming of the Shrew on 24, 25 April is another example of pure art. Despite his long-established tradition of working only with his own company, acclaimed choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot accepted the Bolshoi Theatre's offer, himself stitched together a score from fragments of music by Dmitri Shostakovich, and created a masterpiece that has been eagerly devoured by audiences. DANCE OPEN is the first time that the performance has been presented away from its home stage.

The Vienna State Ballet will become an undoubted discovery for St. Petersburg audience: Manuel Legris, a great dancer, the very embodiment of ballet, having taken control of the company, has transformed it from being famously «strong in the classics» into a genuine choreographic trend-setter - and their program Contra Clockwise Witness is a proof to that. This fascinating company is coming to Russia for the first time to perform at DANCE OPEN on 25 April on main Stage of the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater with the program consisting of three ballets staged by young choreographers.

The Grand Gala will feature many stars new to the St. Petersburg public - charming prima Sarah Lamb and virtuoso Vadim Muntagirov from Covent Garden, the scintillating Isabella Boylston from the US and acclaimed «Cuban sensation» Osiel Gouneo, graceful J'aime Crandall, who «dances with her heart» and amazingly talented Alban Lendorf who represent The Royal Danish Ballet…Soloists from the San Francisco Ballet, historically first company of US, will perform at the Gala for the first time. Others have appeared before at DANCE OPEN - like previous winner of the People’s Choice Award Yoel Carreño, outstanding Daniil Simkin or mysteriously elegant Eric Underwood and Melissa Hamilton - and are now returning to a familiar audience. The concert – culmination of the Festival – will take place on 27 April on stage of the Alexandrinsky theater.

The project is supported by the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg and Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
