V International Festival "Dyagilev P.S."

As part of the UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014, two british ballet companies will appear as special guests of the Festival: their performances, at the Alexandrinsky Theater, will include Sutra (choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui) and FAR (choreography by Wayne McGregor). 

The ballet Sutra, which audiences around the globe have declared stunning from its very first moments, was premi─Śred in 2008, and thereafter shown immediately around the world to a delighted and enthusiastic reception. The participation 17 chinese monks brings Kung Fu techniques into the heart of the choreography, and combined with an extravagant set design by the outstanding modern sculptor Antony Gormley they make this ballet one of the most powerful and thought-provoking in the modern repertory. Though as yet unfamiliar to Russian audiences, it already acclaimed as one of its choreographer’s most brilliant creations. 

Wayne McGregor's choreography meanwhile establishes its own unique and independent dance system. It has been described as the "higher mathematics" of modern choreography, bringing to it the latest scientific advances in the realm of the human body's bio-rhythms. 

A Conference - ANATOMY OF DANCE – will take place with the participation of established choreographers, including Wayne McGregor, and a range of other researchers into the language of ballet. McGregor’s masterclass is expected to arouse intense interest from an international audience. 

The Festival also gives a major focus to the Perm Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, with concert performances of Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas and the «Dixit Dominus» by George Frederick Handel, conducted by Teodor Currentzis who is now a multiple winner of the National Theatre Award, the "Golden Mask". 

The 110th anniversary of the birth of George Balanchine will be celebrated with a photo exhibition by that eminent chronicler of New York City Ballet - American photographer Paul Kolnik. 

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the State Hermitage Museum a concert of chamber music entitled “In the times of Catherine the Great” will be perfomed by the Ensemble of Catherine the Great, conducted by Andrey Reshetin.
