On March 22, 1986 during the 17th session of Helsinki Convention an annual celebration of Baltic Sea Day was proposed and accepted

This date was chosen due to the fact that the Convention itself was signed on March 22 and that the World day of Water is also celebrated on this day. The main reason of establishing this holiday is informing people about the high need of protecting the Baltic region's environment and draw the attention of academics and politicians.
