On June 7, 1732 the first Winter Palace was built for Empress Anna Ioanovna

The first Winter Palace was in fact built by Peter I in 1708 for his family and himself. It was a small house in Holland style. Ten years later the future Emperor ordered digging a canal in front of the building. It was named after the palace — the Winter canal.
