On May 17,1891 a monument to Alexander Suvorov was opened on the Field of Mars
The opening ceremony was attended by the Emperor Alexander I, Suvorov's son and general officers of Saint Petersburg. The idea of creating the monument to one of the greatest military leaders, who had never lost a single battle, belonged to the Emperor Paul I. It was meant to resemble the triumphal monuments to warlords of the Roman Empire. In 1818 the sculpture was moved to the Suvorovskaya square, where it still remains.
