On May 8, 1965 the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR awarded Leningrad the «Gold Star» medal

This officially identified Leningrad as a «hero city» — that is the honorary title awarded to Leningrad at the time of war. The medal was initially called «Hero of the Soviet Union», but the name was changed to «Gold Star». The decoration has the form of a five-pointed star with an inscription «Hero of the USSR». The «Gold Star» was also awarded to people, war heroes, bestowed with the title «Hero of the Soviet Union».
