On May 22, 1711 the first St. Petersburg print shop published the first issue of «Vedomosti» newspaper
This is the first and the oldest printed public newspaper in Russia. It used to be published only in Moscow till May 22. The newspaper was created by the order of Peter the Great. The first editor was Fyodor Polikarpov-Orlov — the director of the Moscow Printing house. The Emperor himself wrote many articles for the paper.
