March 13, 1881 is the day of the last attempt on the life of Alexander II, which led to his death
The Emperor was attacked on the embankment of the Gribojedow-Kanal (known as the Catherine Kanal by the time) in St. Petersburg. The assassins were members of an organization «Narodnaya Volya». «Narodnaya Volya» had hoped that the murder of the tsar would bring out a revolution. Later by order of the Aleksander II the Church of the Savior on Blood was built on the site of the incident in memory of Alexander II.
