March 10, 1755 is the opening night of the first opera performance in Russian
The first performance — the opera «Céphale et Procris» in Russian — took place in the St. Petersburg's opera house near the Summer Garden. The libretto was composed by a poet Alexander Sumarokov to the music of Francesco Araja. Many young Russian musicians, Maksym Berezovsky and Dmitry Bortniansky among them, started their creative careers through these performances. Sometimes famous persons of the royal household would take part in the act side by side with opera professionals.
