On February 6, 1900 a Russian scientist Alexander Popov transmitted the first SOS radiosignal in the sea

The radiogram was sent to the commander of an ice-breaker ship «Yermak»: a block of ice with 50 fishermen drifted away from the shore near the Lavansary island of Finland. The breaker recieved the message and immediately put to the sea. All the fishermen were saved.
