January 22, 1905 is marked by tragic events in Saint Petersburg and is known as the «Bloody» or «Red» Sunday

The tragic events of that day led to the start of the Russian Revolution of 1905. The strike of the factories resulted in a march to the Winter Palace. The workers wanted to lodge a petition to Nicholas II for improving working conitions. Though the demonstration was not aggressive, the participants were fired upon by soldiers of the Imperial Guard. The crackdown resulted in killing several hundreds of people and overwhelmingly negative reaction of the society.
