On January 13, 1728 the Academy of Sciences published the first issue of the newspaper «Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti»
This socio-political newspaper of St. Petersburg initially used to be published twice a week, and then daily since 1800. Among the editors are the famous personalities like Gerhard Müller, Mikhail Lomonosov, Ippolit Bogdanovich and Andrey Krayevsky. All through the XVIII century the «Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti» had been the main and the only newspaper in the country. The publishing of the newspaper stopped in 1917 and was resumed in 1991 — now it is one of the most influential periodic publications in the Northwestern region of Russia.
