January 11, 1940 was the opening night of the ballet «Romeo and Juliet» by Sergei Prokofiev in the Mariinsky Theatre
Sergei Prokofiev completed his work on this piece of art by September of 1935 and performed the composition on a piano in the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre on October 4, 1935. The Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre refused to stage the «Romeo and Juliet» because the music style was too unusual for the time. For the first time the ballet was staged in 1938, in the Opera house of Brno, Czechoslovakia. The ballet then consisted of a single act, but in 1939 the composer added several parts, and by the time of the opening night in USSR the «Romeo and Juliet» included three acts, thirteen scenes, a prologue and an epilogue. In the role of Juliet starred the outstanding dancer Galina Ulanova.
