On January 3, 1850 (December 22, 1849) 20 members of a subversive organisation called «Petrashevsky Circle» were sentenced to death
The memebers of the organisation, that was headed by Mikhail Petrashevsky, were sent to Semonov-Plaz from Peter and Paul Fortress. Among the accused stood the young engineering lieutenant Fyodor Dostoevsky, who by the time had already successfully begun his career as a writer. Right after the announcement of the verdict a carriage rushed onto the Plaz, and an officer declared, that the death sentence had been replaced for all of them with penal colony.
