The church was built in 1883—1907 on the site, where the Tsar Alexander II was wounded to death. The Church on the Spilled Blood (The Church of the Resurrection) was founded after the joint project by architect А.А. Parland and senior priest of the Troitse-Sergieeva Poustinia archimandrite Ignaty (Malyshev). They fulfilled a wish of Alexander III and constructed a church in "genuinely Russian style" with preservation of the site of his father's fatal wound inside the church. Mosaic decor - one of the largest collections of monumental mosaic in Europe, accounting for 7056 square meters - plays a unique role in creating an artistic image of the Church on the Spilled Blood (The Church of the Resurrection).
