The series of palaces and gardens of Pavlovsk created during an era of blossoming of the Russian classicism of the end XVIII – the beginning of the XIX centuries is the monument of a cultural heritage which is under protection of UNESCO. On December 12, 1777, in birthday of the first son (future emperor Alexander I), the successor of a throne Pavel Petrovich and the Grand duchess Maria Fiodorovna received from the empress Catherine II 362 tenths of the earth the banks of the river Slavianka as a gift to create the Summer residence. This date is considered to be the birthday of Pavlovsk. Pavlovsk Park is one of the largest landscape parks, both in Russia and Europe (about 600 hectares).
